To the north of Taupo you’ll find a concentrated collection of national wonders within a few minutes of each other. Boiling mud and hissing steam harnessed by the Wairakei power station and the clear, blue Waikato River, or visit Orakei Korako Taupo’s best geothermal attraction. For keen anglers, Lake Taupo is all about the trout fishing with abundant stocks of brown trout and rainbow trout (introduced by settlers to the lake in the late 19th century). It's easily accessed by road - about a three-and-a-half hours' drive from Auckland, and four-and-a-half from Wellington. With fantastic views of both Lake Taupo and the peaks of Tongariro National Park, Waipahihi Botanical Reserve is a gorgeous place to take a stroll.
It is the 20th largest urban area in New Zealand, and the second-largest in the Waikato Region (behind Hamilton). This secluded lodge has 6 grand suites with an innovative architectural design inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright that frames the view of the lake and the mountains. While the immediate surroundings of the hotel are unlovely by New Zealand standards — all slip road and building supplies — it is conveniently placed for Taupo’s airport which is less than five miles (eight kilometres) away. Tongariro National Park is 45 minutes’ drive south and the base of the first chairlift at Whakapapa Skifield another 30 minutes further on.
More than 30 rivers and streams flow into the lake, with only one outlet – the Waikato River. The Taupo eruption's three main vents ran parallel to Lake Taupo's current southeastern shore. Modern Lake Taupo partly fills the caldera generated during this eruption.

Taupo is a tourist centre, particularly in the summer, as it offers panoramic views over the lake and to the volcanic mountains of Tongariro National Park to the south. It offers a number of tourist activities including sky diving, jet boating, paragliding, and bungy jumping. Five Mile Bay – is located on the east side of Lake Taupo, south of Wharewaka and north of Waitahanui on State Highway 1 just west of the Taupo Airport. It is a popular swimming/water skiing beach which gets very busy in summer. Five Mile Bay is one of three similar named bays along the lake shoreline, the others being Two Mile Bay and Three Mile Bay.
